Google is introducing Gemini 3 Pro to power its AI Overviews in search. According to Robby Stein, a Google Search product manager, the system will now automatically direct complex queries to Google's most powerful language model, while simpler questions will continue to be handled by faster models.
This intelligent routing is already operational within Google's AI-powered search chat—AI Mode—and is now being extended to AI Overviews, the quick answers that appear directly beneath search queries. This feature is available globally in English, but exclusively for paid Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers.
AI Overviews and similar services from other companies have faced criticism for confidently providing incorrect answers. While citing sources can create an impression of credibility, users seldom verify them. More powerful models can reduce errors but cannot eliminate them entirely.
