Leaked Information Indicates Grok Could Soon Gain the Ability to Edit Spreadsheets

2025-06-24

Leaked code reveals xAI is developing an advanced file editor with spreadsheet capabilities for Grok. This indicates the company aims to integrate AI assistants into productivity tools to compete with OpenAI, Google, and Microsoft.

Reverse engineer Nima Owji, who disclosed this discovery, wrote: "You can converse with Grok and request assistance while editing files!"

TechCrunch has contacted xAI for confirmation and further details.

Although xAI hasn't detailed its strategy for interactive multimodal AI workspaces, it has released several announcements showcasing its approach. In April 2025, xAI launched Grok Studio - a split-screen workspace allowing users to collaborate with Grok to generate documents, code, reports, and browser games. The platform also introduced workspace creation features for file and conversation organization.

While OpenAI and Microsoft offer similar tools, Google's Gemini workspace for Sheets, Docs, and Gmail appears most comparable to xAI's rumored development. Google's tools can edit Docs and Sheets while enabling Gemini chat during document review or editing, though Gemini workspace operates exclusively within Google's ecosystem.

Details remain unclear about potential file types supported by xAI's editor beyond spreadsheets, or whether xAI plans to build a complete productivity suite competing with Google Workspace or Microsoft 365.

If Owji's findings are accurate, this advanced editor would mark progress toward Elon Musk's vision of transforming X into an all-in-one app encompassing documents, chat, payments, and social media.
