Read moreFounded just months ago by former DeepMind researcher David Silver, the UK-based AI startup Ineffable Intelligence has successfully closed a $1.1 billion funding round, propelling its valuation to $5.1 billion. The lab is aggressively positioning itself to develop next-generation AI architectures that aim to surpass the current capabilities of large language models.
According to its newly launched official website, Ineffable Intelligence is focused on engineering a "super learner" powered by reinforcement learning. This system is designed to autonomously discover knowledge and skills without relying on human-generated datasets, utilizing trial-and-error exploration rather than supervised training—a methodology that aligns perfectly with Silver's academic and research expertise.
Prior to launching this venture, Silver served as a professor at University College London and led the reinforcement learning division at Google-owned DeepMind. After dedicating over a decade to the field, he departed to establish this ambitious new laboratory.
During his tenure at DeepMind, Silver played a pivotal role in creating algorithms like AlphaZero. These systems mastered chess and Go by learning exclusively through self-play, completely bypassing human strategies or historical game records, and ultimately defeating world-champion AI engines. Ineffable Intelligence now aims to scale this paradigm, empowering its super learner to independently uncover and synthesize all forms of knowledge through direct experience.
While the super learner remains in its developmental infancy, the founding team's ambitions are anything but modest. The company's website boldly declares: "If successful, this will represent a scientific breakthrough comparable to Darwin’s theory of evolution. His laws explained all life; ours will explain and construct all intelligence."
In a personal statement published on the company blog, Silver described Ineffable Intelligence as the "work of his lifetime." He further told Wired that any personal financial gains from the venture will be donated to high-impact charities dedicated to saving lives.
Although specific details regarding the startup's monetization strategy, profitability timeline, and revenue projections remain undisclosed, investor enthusiasm has remained undeterred.
As reported by Wired, the latest funding round was co-led by Sequoia Capital and Lightspeed Venture Partners, with participation from Index Ventures, Google, and Nvidia. Additional backers include the British Business Bank and Sovereign AI, a recently established UK sovereign risk fund focused on artificial intelligence.
Rapidly achieving "half-decacorn" status with a valuation exceeding $5 billion, Ineffable Intelligence joins an elite roster of AI startups founded by renowned academics. These ventures consistently attract massive early-stage capital, prompting industry insiders to jokingly label them "coconut rounds"—a playful evolution beyond traditional seed funding. Just last month, AMI Labs, co-founded by Turing Award winner and former Meta AI chief Yann LeCun, secured $1.03 billion at a $3.5 billion valuation.
The trend shows no signs of slowing. Recursive Superintelligence, a UK-registered startup co-founded by former DeepMind chief scientist Tim Rocktäschel, is reportedly raising $500 million, with strong market demand potentially pushing the total raise to $1 billion.
While some of these ventures maintain ties to the US market, their emergence underscores London's accelerating momentum as a global AI hub. This trajectory is largely anchored by DeepMind's continued presence in the UK following Google's 2014 acquisition. Beyond DeepMind, Jeff Bezos’s AI initiative, Project Prometheus, is reportedly in advanced negotiations to secure office space adjacent to Google’s UK AI research campus.
This concentrated ecosystem has also fostered a robust talent pipeline. Reports indicate that several former DeepMind engineers and researchers are already transitioning into executive and leadership roles at Ineffable Intelligence, further solidifying its operational foundation.
