This year's Consumer Electronics Show (CES) featured an abundance of AI-powered companion and assistant robots. Among them, the DeskMate desktop assistant from Loona stands out with a clever twist: at its core, it functions as a desktop charging hub equipped with three USB-C ports, one USB-A port, and a magnetic wireless charging pad. When you place an iPhone on the wireless charging zone, it automatically launches an AI companion application.

What makes DeskMate unique is its smart use of existing technology—leveraging your smartphone rather than requiring standalone hardware. The device doesn't need its own display, camera, or microphone; these capabilities are handled entirely by the iPhone (for now, it supports only Apple devices). Additionally, thanks to its integrated charging functionality, it can potentially replace your current desktop charger instead of adding clutter to your workspace.

The DeskMate stand offers adjustable tilt and rotation, ensuring the device remains visually oriented toward you during voice interactions. It features expressive, Pixar-style animated eyes that are not just charming but also functional—capable of integrating with collaboration tools like Slack and offering meeting assistance features.

DeskMate is expected to launch on a crowdfunding platform in March. However, my biggest concern revolves around pricing. While the final retail price hasn’t been announced, the company has indicated it will be “under $300”—which feels steep for a device that relies heavily on a smartphone to deliver its full experience.
