Read moreMeta is introducing a new "Live Chat" feature on Threads, designed to facilitate real-time, event-driven conversations. During its initial limited rollout, users will be able to join public discussion rooms tied to specific live events, where they can either follow the flow or actively contribute. The beta launch will coincide with the NBA Playoffs. Curated by select creators, these sessions will grant active speaking privileges to a limited group, while the broader audience observes and engages in real time.
Built around shared, time-sensitive experiences, this functionality moves away from traditional asynchronous posting by establishing a centralized hub for live dialogue. This structure is particularly effective for high-engagement moments such as sports finals, award ceremonies, product launches, and breaking news. By organizing conversations around these live occurrences, Meta aims to recapture the "second-screen" engagement that has historically driven traffic on competing platforms.
The Live Chat architecture implements a tiered participation model. Each session is initiated and moderated by a host—typically a creator or influencer—who anchors the core discussion. Approximately 150 users will be allowed to post actively, while a larger audience can join as viewers, reacting instantly through likes, emojis, and other interactive tools. Selecting the NBA Playoffs for the beta test is a strategic move, as live sports consistently generate peak digital engagement, with fans actively seeking dedicated digital spaces to analyze plays, debate controversies, and discuss outcomes.
This update significantly strengthens Threads' competitive positioning against established social formats. While Instagram relies on Broadcast Channels and live video streaming, and X dominates with real-time microblogging and audio Spaces, Threads’ Live Chat synthesizes both approaches into a text-centric, instantaneous, and community-driven format. This hybrid model is strategically positioned to attract users who prefer rapid, low-friction discussions without the bandwidth or production requirements of audio or video.
Beyond driving engagement, Live Chat unlocks fresh monetization and marketing pathways for creators and brands. Upon full deployment, the feature could support premium integrations such as sponsored chat rooms, exclusive access tiers, and event-linked promotional campaigns. Furthermore, algorithmic surfacing of trending live chats during major global events will enhance content discoverability, ultimately boosting overall platform retention and daily active usage.
"We are continuously refining the Live Chat experience and will soon roll out additional capabilities, including co-hosting tools, live-updated step-by-step content, lock-screen widgets for tracking real-time activity, and the ability to quote or share chat messages directly to your Threads feed," the social media conglomerate confirmed.
