OpenAI's First ChatGPT Device May Be a Smart Speaker with Camera

2026-02-24

Citing The Information, OpenAI's inaugural hardware release is set to be a smart speaker integrated with a camera, priced between $200 and $300. This device can recognize items on surrounding surfaces or detect nearby conversations, utilizing a facial recognition system akin to Face ID to facilitate seamless transactions.

In May of last year, OpenAI acquired the hardware company founded by Jony Ive for nearly $6.5 billion. Following this, details regarding their hardware offerings have emerged, indicating the first device will not be wearable and will not reach customers before March 2027. Other hardware firms are also aggressively entering the AI product space, including Ive's previous employer, Apple. Reports suggest Apple is crafting its own smart glasses, an AI-powered pendant, and camera-enabled AirPods.

Beyond the smart speaker, OpenAI is reportedly potentially developing smart glasses and intelligent lighting, areas where Apple may also be active. However, mass production for OpenAI's glasses might not occur until 2028. While prototypes for tools like smart lamps exist, The Information states it remains unclear if these will launch, as OpenAI's hardware initiatives are still in early phases.
