Last night, the AI chatbot ChatGPT quickly resumed normal operations after a brief disruption. According to Downdetector, a company specializing in tracking website and service outages, over 10,000 users in the UK reported being unable to access the AI chatbot on Thursday.
When users attempted to access ChatGPT, a message appeared on the page stating: "The web server reported a bad gateway." This disruption drew significant attention and discussion.
OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT, promptly posted updates on their official status page. They stated that repair measures were implemented at 15:09 Pacific Time and they are closely "monitoring the results" to ensure stable system operation. The outage began around 11:00 GMT on Thursday, but OpenAI has not yet publicly disclosed the specific cause.
Although this interruption caused some inconvenience for certain users, ChatGPT's popularity worldwide has not diminished. Many users expressed concern about the issue on social media, while others humorously commented, saying "ChatGPT is down, do we have to think for ourselves?"
ChatGPT's status page indicated that the application indeed experienced a "higher error rate" at the time, and the company is actively investigating and taking steps to resolve the issue.
Since its launch in November 2022, ChatGPT has rapidly gained popularity, sparking immense global interest and investment fervor. With its powerful natural language processing capabilities and intelligent conversation features, it has won the hearts and trust of many users. Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, revealed that by December 2024, ChatGPT had been used weekly by more than 300 million people worldwide, becoming a highly prominent star product.
While many of these users opt for the free version of ChatGPT, OpenAI also offers various membership tiers, with the highest monthly fee reaching up to $200.
