Google Introduces Enhanced Gemini Features for New Pixel Buds

2025-08-21

Following last year's trend, Google revealed new Gemini features during its Wednesday "Made By Google" event. These include AI-powered photography tools for the Pixel 10 series and upgraded capabilities for the Pixel Watch 4. The tech giant is now showcasing Gemini integrations in its latest earbuds lineup - the budget-friendly Pixel Buds 2a and enhanced Pixel Buds Pro 2 models.

Key highlights demonstrated during the event include active noise cancellation (ANC) for the Pixel Buds 2a and innovative AI-based ambient noise reduction. The Pro 2 version receives significant updates, introducing gesture controls that allow users to accept/reject calls and messages by nodding or shaking their heads.

Pixel Buds 2a

As the second generation of Google's A-series earbuds, the Pixel Buds 2a position as the company's most affordable audio solution while delivering premium features approaching the original Pixel Buds Pro specifications.

This model marks a significant technological leap with the introduction of active noise cancellation - a first for A-series products previously lacking any form of noise suppression. The new ANC technology effectively blocks distracting ambient sounds, ensuring clear conversations even in challenging environments.

An additional feature is the Crystal Voice calling system, which utilizes Google's AI to eliminate background noise. When combined with the earbuds' windproof mesh design, this creates optimal call clarity for both parties in the conversation.

The Pixel Buds 2a also introduce a new ambient mode previously exclusive to the Pro series. This feature allows users to maintain environmental awareness by letting in surrounding sounds while listening to audio content.

Gemini hands-free support enables voice interactions with Google's AI assistant for tasks like finding nearby restaurants, navigating routes, reading emails, and controlling music playback. The system requires no phone interaction - simply speak to access functionality.

Battery life has been doubled compared to the original A-series models, addressing a major user concern for extended listening sessions.

Design innovations include the smallest and lightest A-series earbuds ever produced, housed in a compact charging case. The IP54 rating provides sweat and water resistance, making them ideal for workouts and unexpected rain showers.

A newly implemented rotational stability system brings budget models closer to Pro-level performance. Users can achieve secure fit by rotating counterclockwise or adjust to a more comfortable fit by turning clockwise.

Priced at $130 (up from under $100 for predecessors), the 2a model comes in two new color options - Hazelnut and Iris - reflecting its enhanced feature set.

Pixel Buds Pro 2

Previously launched in 2024, the Pixel Buds Pro 2 now receive major functional upgrades while maintaining their premium positioning.

As anticipated, these earbuds support Gemini hands-free interactions through voice commands. New additions include intuitive gesture control using onboard accelerometers and sensors to accept/reject calls and messages by simple head movements.

Expanded Gemini integration now enables cross-app functionality. Users can add grocery list items in Keep or schedule calendar events directly through voice commands while using the earbuds.

Other notable features include Adaptive Audio technology that automatically adjusts noise suppression levels based on ambient conditions. This maintains environmental awareness while reducing distractions in noisy settings. The new Loud Noise Protection function passively attenuates sudden loud sounds like siren blasts to protect hearing.

Priced at $230 with a new Moonstone color option, most new features will arrive via software updates by late September. All existing Pro 2 owners will receive these upgrades through automatic firmware updates.

Pre-orders for the Pixel Buds 2a and updated Pro 2 are available starting today. The Pro 2 will ship on August 28, with the 2a model becoming available for purchase on October 9.
