Intel Joins Musk's Terafab Project, Partners with Tesla, SpaceX, and xAI on Large AI Chip Systems

2026-04-08

Intel has officially confirmed its participation in Elon Musk's Terafab initiative, partnering with Tesla, SpaceX, and xAI to build a tightly integrated next-generation chip manufacturing ecosystem. The project aims to centralize chip design, fabrication, and packaging, with a goal of producing AI processors capable of up to one terawatt of computing power annually. Intel will focus on delivering advanced manufacturing expertise, serving as a critical production partner to drive Musk's ambitions in expanding AI and robotics.

"Our capabilities in the large-scale design, manufacturing, and packaging of ultra-high-performance chips will help accelerate Terafab's goal of producing 1 terawatt of computing capacity annually to drive progress in future AI and robotics," the semiconductor giant stated.

Notably, Terafab seeks to revolutionize semiconductor production by integrating design, manufacturing, packaging, and testing into a single facility, rather than relying on a global network distributed across the US, Taiwan, and South Korea. This move comes as demand for AI computing power surges, driven by technologies such as generative AI, large language models, and autonomous systems.

Currently, companies like NVIDIA dominate AI chip design, while manufacturers like TSMC play a core role in production. Therefore, Terafab is positioned as an effort to challenge this model, aiming to create a high-volume, end-to-end system capable of efficiently mass-producing advanced AI chips. Financially, early estimates suggest an initial investment between $20 billion and $25 billion, with potentially significantly higher capital investment required as the project scales.

Intel's participation is now seen as a significant boost to the project, given its deep expertise in chip manufacturing and its efforts to regain leadership in advanced technology. The company has been investing in next-generation processes, such as 18A, and advanced packaging methods that combine multiple chip components into high-performance units. By collaborating with Musk's ecosystem, Intel not only secures strong demand from companies like Tesla and xAI but also strengthens its position in the rapidly growing AI hardware market, which is expected to reach hundreds of billions of dollars in the coming years.

For Musk's companies, the latest agreement helps connect hardware and AI more closely. Tesla is already manufacturing custom chips for autonomous driving and robots like Optimus, while xAI is developing large AI models that require massive computing power. SpaceX adds ideas to the plan with its solar-powered and naturally cooled space data center initiative. In summary, this increases the demand for efficient, specialized chips, which Terafab aims to produce on a large scale.

However, this development comes at a critical time when Intel is facing financial pressure, despite strong industry support. Last year, NVIDIA invested approximately $5 billion in Intel, acquiring a 4% stake, while the US government also acquired a 10% stake through an $8.9 billion investment, part of the federal CHIPS program. Despite this support, Intel reported a 4% decline in revenue to approximately $13.7 billion and a net loss of about $591 million in the fourth quarter of fiscal year 2025.
