Anthropic Says "Claude Will Remain Ad-Free," Unlike ChatGPT

2026-02-05

Anthropic has declared it will not incorporate advertisements into its AI chatbot Claude, a stance that starkly contrasts with OpenAI's confirmed plans to permit ads within ChatGPT. To underscore this commitment, the company is launching a Super Bowl commercial that satirizes unnamed competitors for introducing ads into their AI services.

In a recent blog post, the company stated: "We want Claude to act unequivocally in the interests of users." "Therefore, we have made a decision: Claude will remain ad-free. Our users will not see 'sponsored' links alongside conversations with Claude; Claude's responses will not be influenced by advertisers nor contain unsolicited third-party product placements."

The announcement further elaborates on why including advertisements is "incompatible with the identity we envision for Claude." It suggests that profit motives could potentially hinder the delivery of the most helpful advice to users inquiring about health issues, such as sleep problems, and that ads might also distract users who rely on Claude for work-related tasks.

Nevertheless, Anthropic has left room for a potential policy reversal in the future: "Should we need to reconsider this approach, we will transparently explain the reasons."

Should the company later reverse its stance, it might appear hypocritical, especially considering its newly released Super Bowl ad. This ad is one of four similarly themed commercials currently available on YouTube, depicting an AI inserting advertisements while offering advice. According to The Wall Street Journal, a 30-second version will air during Sunday's game, while a one-minute ad featuring an advertisement-driven AI therapist will be broadcast during the pre-game show.

While the ads do not explicitly name ChatGPT, their target is clear. Last month, OpenAI announced that ads would soon appear for free users or those on the cheaper Go tier within ChatGPT, though these ads are intended to be "clearly labeled" and separated from the chatbot's responses to queries.
