Anthropic Launches Voice Mode for Claude

2025-05-28

Anthropic has started rolling out a "Voice Mode" for its Claude chatbot application.

Voice Mode, which is currently in beta testing, enables users of the Claude mobile app to "engage in full spoken conversations with Claude," and will be available in English over the next few weeks, according to updates from Anthropic's official account on X and the company's website documentation.

At least one user on X reported gaining access to Voice Mode late Tuesday. By default, it is powered by Anthropic's Claude Sonnet 4 model.

"Voice Mode... allows you to talk with Claude and hear responses via voice, making it easier to use Claude when your hands are busy but your mind isn't," the support page explains. "Voice Mode transforms how you interact with Claude by... displaying key points on-screen as Claude speaks [and] enabling you to converse with Claude while hearing its voice responses."

We're launching the Beta version of Voice Mode on mobile devices.

Try starting a voice conversation and let Claude summarize your calendar or search through your documents.

Many AI companies, including OpenAI, offer voice chat experiences for their respective chatbots. For instance, Google has Gemini Live, while xAI features Grok's Voice Mode. Each allows users to interact with bots by speaking instead of typing, making interactions feel more natural and intuitive.

With Anthropic's Voice Mode, users can discuss content such as documents and images, choosing from five different voice options. Users can also switch instantly between text and voice, and review transcripts and summaries after conversations.

The feature does have some limitations. Voice conversations count towards regular usage limits — Anthropic states that most free users can expect 20-30 conversations. Moreover, only paid Claude subscribers can utilize the Google Workspace connector, which allows Voice Mode to access Google Calendar appointments and Gmail emails (Google Docs integration is exclusive to the Claude Enterprise plan).

Mike Krieger, Anthropic’s Chief Product Officer, confirmed in an early March interview with the Financial Times that the company was developing voice capabilities for Claude. According to the report, Anthropic is in talks with its major investor and partner Amazon, along with ElevenLabs, an AI startup focused on voice technology, to potentially enhance future voice functionalities for Claude.
