Peng previously led Apple's internal team responsible for developing foundational AI models powering intelligent devices and other product ecosystems. While Apple's AI capabilities remain underdeveloped compared to rivals like OpenAI, Anthropic, and Meta, reports suggest the company evaluated third-party AI models for its upcoming Siri enhancement project.

Industry sources indicate Peng's exit marks the initial departure from Apple's struggling AI division, which has seen multiple executive movements recently. However, his expertise in optimizing AI models for compact devices could prove valuable as he joins Meta's growing team of AI specialists recruited from Google DeepMind, OpenAI, and Safe Superintelligence over the past several months.
