DoorDash appears to have confirmed a widely discussed incident involving drivers using AI-generated images to falsely claim deliveries.
According to Nexstar, Austin resident Byrne Hobart said he experienced the issue firsthand and posted on X: "Incredible. The DoorDash driver accepted the order, immediately marked it as delivered, and submitted an AI-generated image of a DoorDash receipt (left) placed at our front door (right)."
After his post began gaining traction, Hobart added more context, acknowledging that his story could be "easily" faked. However, he noted, "Someone commented under the post saying the same thing happened to them—also in Austin, and with the same driver display name."
As for how the driver pulled it off, Hobart speculated the individual used a compromised account on a jailbroken phone, leveraging a DoorDash feature that displays photos from prior deliveries to obtain an image of his doorstep.
A DoorDash spokesperson stated, “Following a swift investigation into this incident, our team has permanently removed the delivery person’s account and ensured the customer was reimbursed. We maintain a zero-tolerance policy toward fraud and employ a combination of technology and human review to detect and prevent bad actors from abusing our platform.”
