Google Maps Now Uses AI to Generate Photo Captions

2026-04-08

Google officially unveiled a new feature this Tuesday aimed at simplifying how users contribute local insights to Maps. A key highlight is the integration of Gemini, which now automatically generates captions when users share photos or videos of specific locations.

After selecting a photo to share, Gemini analyzes the image to suggest a caption, though users retain the ability to edit or remove these suggestions. The company states this tool is designed to accelerate the captioning process during content sharing. Currently, the caption suggestion feature is available in English on iOS devices within the United States, with plans to expand globally and to Android platforms over the coming months.

Additionally, the company has streamlined the process of locating images suitable for community sharing. If users grant media access permissions to Google Maps in their device settings, recently captured photos and videos will appear directly in the "Contribute" tab. Users can then select and publish their chosen media from this view.

"The photos and videos you publish help people better understand a place, such as the overall vibe or the latest menu," Google explained in a blog post. "Now, we are making it easier to find the right images to share."

The photo and video recommendation feature is now accessible globally on both iOS and Android devices.

Furthermore, Google has enhanced the ability for users to track the impact of their contributions, with total points now visible in the "Contribute" tab. Additionally, "Local Guide" levels will be prominently displayed on profile pages. For context, Local Guides earn points by improving Google Maps through adding photos, writing reviews, answering questions, and verifying information.

The company announced updates to achievement badges, making it easier to identify if a user is an "Expert Fact Finder," "Photography Pro," or "Newbie." Moreover, Google introduced new gold profiles to make high-level contributors more recognizable.

Google emphasized that these new features are designed to support its community of over 500 million contributors, who assist others in deciding what to do and where to go by sharing photos, reviews, and videos. Given that Maps relies heavily on contributors to keep information fresh and updated, streamlining the contribution process is a strategic move for the company.
