Google Gemini AI Assistant Integrates Spotify Music Playback

2024-11-27

Spotify now supports Google’s Gemini Extensions, enabling users to search for and play music through a generative AI assistant using natural language requests. The feature was initially discovered in Google’s app code in June this year and is reportedly being rolled out to compatible Android devices.

Gemini can play music on Spotify based on song titles, artist names, album titles, playlist names, or specific events, but it currently does not support creating playlists or radio stations on Spotify. Notably, if users have linked other music services such as YouTube Music, they must verbally (or via text input) specify the desired service during the initial request, after which Gemini will default to the last used service.

Spotify is the second non-Google app to receive Gemini functionality, following WhatsApp, which began supporting it in October last year.

Google's support page for this extension states that users must first link their Spotify and Google accounts to enable the feature in Gemini Apps and must enable Gemini Apps Activity, which can retain AI query history for up to 72 hours. Additionally, users cannot use the Spotify extension in Google Messages, Gemini Web apps, or the Gemini app on iOS, and currently, the feature only supports English language settings.
