OpenAI Plans to Integrate Video Generation Tool Sora into ChatGPT App

OpenAI's leadership mentioned during a Friday office hours meeting on Discord that the company ultimately aims to integrate its AI video generation tool, Sora, directly into ChatGPT.

Currently, Sora is only accessible through a dedicated web application launched by OpenAI in December, which allows users to generate video clips up to 20 seconds long using the AI video model of the same name. However, Rohan Sahai, the product head of Sora, revealed that OpenAI plans to expand Sora's availability across more platforms and enhance its creative capabilities.

In the months leading up to Sora’s launch, OpenAI primarily marketed the tool to creatives and video production studios. Now, the company is ramping up efforts to broaden the audience for this AI-powered video creation tool.

Sahai stated that OpenAI is actively exploring ways to integrate Sora with ChatGPT, aiming to combine the two products. However, he did not provide a specific timeline. He hinted that the version of Sora integrated into ChatGPT might not be as feature-rich as its standalone web app, which allows users to edit and splice video clips.

By enabling users to generate Sora videos from within ChatGPT, OpenAI may attract more users. Integrating Sora into ChatGPT could also encourage users to upgrade to premium subscription tiers of ChatGPT, potentially offering higher limits for video generation.

Sahai explained during the office hours session that OpenAI initially launched Sora as a standalone web app to maintain the simplicity of ChatGPT.

Since its debut, OpenAI has enhanced the web experience of Sora, providing users with more ways to browse community-generated Sora videos. Sahai also noted that OpenAI "hopes to develop" a standalone mobile app for Sora and mentioned that the Sora team is actively seeking mobile engineers.

OpenAI also intends to extend Sora's generative capabilities to the realm of images.

Sahai confirmed that OpenAI is working on an AI image generator powered by Sora, validating previous rumors about the project. While ChatGPT already supports image generation driven by OpenAI's DALL-E 3 model, an image generator powered by Sora might allow users to create more photorealistic images.

Additionally, Sahai revealed that OpenAI is developing a new version of Sora Turbo, the model currently supporting the Sora web app.
