Google Launches Experimental AI Tool 'Learn About'

2024-11-12

Google has recently unveiled an experimental AI tool named "Learn About," which sets itself apart from well-known chatbots like Gemini and ChatGPT. Built on Google's LearnLM AI model introduced earlier this year, it aims to integrate educational research and customize experiences based on users' learning habits. The responses it offers feature enhanced visual and interactive elements, presented in an educational format.

In a test addressing the question "How vast is the universe?", both "Learn About" and Google Gemini responded with "The diameter of the observable universe is approximately 93 billion light-years." However, their presentation styles differed. Gemini opted to display a cosmic illustration sourced from Wikipedia, accompanied by two summary paragraphs and a reference link. In contrast, "Learn About" highlighted an image from the educational site Physics Forums and included additional content focused on learning.

"Learn About" also provides extra background information in a textbook-style box format, such as "Why It Matters" and word definitions to help users "build vocabulary." Additionally, the sidebar lists other related topics, encouraging users to further explore the tool.

Furthermore, when addressing the challenging question "Which glue is best suited for pizza?", "Learn About" delivered the correct answer. However, the inclusion of a "Common Misconceptions" label in the response suggests that this question is not frequently asked.
