Anthropic Upgrades Claude Memory to Attract AI Users

2026-03-03

Anthropic has released updates designed to simplify switching from other chatbots to Claude AI. Free tier users now have access to Claude's memory feature, alongside new prompts and dedicated tools for importing data from competing AI services. These upgrades allow users of rivals such as OpenAI's ChatGPT or Google's Gemini to quickly replicate their preferred AI's collected data and transfer it to Anthropic's chatbot. Consequently, they avoid the need to "start from scratch" when teaching Claude the context and history already known by previous bots.

Options to import and export memory have been available since last October, coinciding with the launch of the toggle for Claude's memory. Previously, the memory feature was restricted to paid Claude subscribers, but now all Claude users can enable it by navigating to "Settings" and then "Features." This menu is also where users can locate the new memory import tool, which requires copying a pre-written prompt into the previous AI and then pasting the output back into Claude's import utility.

Anthropic is introducing an upgraded memory import tool as Claude gains traction through utilities like Claude Code and Claude Cowork. Last month, Anthropic launched the new Opus 4.6 and Sonnet 4.6 models, with the company stating that these versions perform better in coding and completing complex tasks, such as managing spreadsheets or filling out forms.

Anthropic has recently experienced a surge in attention after opposing Pentagon demands to relax regulations on its AI models. The company publicly declared that it has drawn "red lines" against mass surveillance and fully autonomous lethal weapons.
