Android Unveils "One of the Biggest Updates in Years" at I/O Event

2025-05-14

Android continues to evolve. Instead of saving all the announcements for its annual developer conference, Google held a dedicated event for Android.

The Android Show: I/O Edition showcased the future direction of the Android platform, one week ahead of Google I/O 2025.

Material 3 Expressive is set to launch later this year.

Built on Google's Material You user interface design language, Material 3 Expressive aims to simplify personalization on Android and Wear OS devices. It introduces new animations, blur effects, haptic feedback, and more. Future Android devices will also feature expanded color themes, fonts, and UI components.

A recent post on Google’s The Keyword blog stated: “Personalization is at the heart of Android, and Material 3 Expressive — one of our biggest updates in years — is designed to make your device feel truly unique.”

Gemini AI comes to Android Auto

Android Auto is also getting a significant update through Gemini AI integration. By using Gemini as an in-car virtual assistant, drivers can interact with the operating system using natural language. Tasks like sending messages, navigating to businesses, or playing Spotify music can all be completed hands-free without pressing buttons or using controls.

Gemini currently supports translations in over 40 languages. The AI-powered virtual assistant is expected to be available in cars equipped with Android Auto within a few months and will integrate into vehicles pre-installed with Google by the end of 2025 — including the Honda Passport, Lincoln Nautilus, and Renault R5.

Devices gain enhanced security technology

Google’s development team has addressed some of the latest mobile security threats by introducing advanced security controls for Android, including:

  • Improved protection against scam texts, including cryptocurrency scams, road scams, and gift card fraud.
  • A transition from “Find My Device” to “Find Center,” which can be used to track lost devices or share locations with friends and family. Later this year, satellite connectivity will be available for those without cellular service.
  • Easy access to Google’s strongest security features — the Advanced Protection Suite. These additional security controls can be toggled on or off as needed.

Looking ahead to Google I/O

As expected, the Android Show: I/O Edition focused on software enhancements. With Google I/O scheduled for May 20-21, 2025, other announcements are anticipated, including hardware updates.
