OpenAI has launched its AI-powered video app Sora on Android. According to an announcement made on Tuesday, the app—designed for creating, sharing, and remixing AI-generated videos—is now available on the Google Play Store in the United States, Canada, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam.
OpenAI initially released Sora for iOS in September, and it surpassed one million downloads within just five days of its launch. In addition to offering a TikTok-like feed of AI-generated videos, Sora enables users to produce personalized AI content featuring themselves or their friends through its “Guest Star” feature. Over recent weeks, however, the app has faced criticism over its approach to deepfakes and copyright protection, prompting OpenAI to reverse its previous opt-out policy for rights holders.
The company has also rolled out a new capability that lets users generate “Character Guest Stars” using reusable avatars. Looking ahead, OpenAI plans to allow intellectual property owners to monetize these appearances by charging fees for the use of beloved characters and personas.
