Riyadh Air Partners with IBM to Introduce AI Agents on Commercial Flights by Early 2026

2025-12-09

IBM and Riyadh Air have announced a strategic partnership to launch what they claim is the world’s first AI-native airline. Built entirely from the ground up with no legacy systems, Riyadh Air leverages artificial intelligence across all operations, setting a new benchmark for both passenger and employee experiences while redefining innovation in the aviation industry.

Riyadh Air operates as an AI-native entity from day one, powered by IBM Consulting’s deep industry expertise, advanced technological capabilities, extensive partner ecosystem, and IBM watsonx Orchestrate.

According to the announcement, initial test flights are already underway, with the airline’s inaugural commercial service scheduled to launch in early 2026.

“By embedding AI into the very foundation of its operations, Riyadh Air has established a new blueprint for building a modern, agile enterprise from scratch,” said Mohamad Ali, Senior Vice President of IBM Consulting.

Riyadh Air is transforming the travel experience by integrating generative and agentic AI into its core operations, creating seamless interactions between technology and human service. A personalized digital workplace—centered around a chat-first platform—will empower employees and streamline HR processes, supporting the airline’s plan to double its workforce.

An AI-powered mobile application will enhance journeys for both staff and passengers. Developed using IBM watsonx Orchestrate, it will deliver proactive concierge services that anticipate traveler needs. Additionally, AI-driven voice bots and agent-assist tools will enable customer service teams to offer tailored support, elevating the overall guest experience while preserving human-centric values.

“We faced a clear choice: become the last airline built on outdated technology or the first designed on the aviation platform of the next decade,” said Adam Boukadida, Chief Financial Officer of Riyadh Air.

The collaboration aims to build a fully AI-driven enterprise that merges digital strategy with operational excellence, ultimately expanding Saudi Arabia’s global connectivity to over 100 destinations and serving millions of travelers by 2030.
