Anthropic's Claude Tops App Store Following Pentagon Controversy

2026-03-02

Despite heightened tensions surrounding negotiations between Anthropic and the Pentagon, the company's AI chatbot, Claude, has unexpectedly gained substantial public traction.

CNBC initially reported that the Claude application surged rapidly within the free charts of the Apple US App Store. By Saturday evening, it overtook OpenAI's ChatGPT to secure the number one position, holding steady through Sunday morning.

SensorTower data reveals that Claude barely cracked the top 100 by late January, staying within the top 20 for much of February. However, its ranking skyrocketed in recent days, climbing from sixth place on Wednesday to fourth on Thursday, before claiming the top spot on Saturday.

A company spokesperson confirmed that daily sign-ups have hit record highs throughout this week. Free user growth has exceeded 60% since January, while the paid subscriber base has more than doubled year-to-date.

This attention follows Anthropic's efforts to negotiate restrictions preventing the Department of Defense from deploying its AI models for mass domestic surveillance or fully autonomous weaponry. Consequently, President Donald Trump ordered federal agencies to cease using all Anthropic products, with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth stating intentions to classify the firm as a supply chain threat.

In the aftermath, OpenAI announced a partnership with the Pentagon. CEO Sam Altman asserted that the agreement incorporates specific safeguards concerning domestic monitoring and automated weapons systems.
