Microsoft Introduces 'Ambient Work' Feature in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint

2026-04-24

This week, Microsoft is rolling out a new agent mode across its core Office applications, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Previously conceptualized as an ambient computing feature, this updated capability significantly elevates the Office Copilot experience that the tech giant has been actively promoting to enterprise clients.

"When Copilot first launched, the underlying AI models simply weren't advanced enough to fully command the applications," admitted Sumit Chauhan, Corporate Vice President of the Microsoft Office Product Group. "Initially, Copilot acted more as a passive assistant within documents—it could answer queries, but it fell short when users needed it to execute direct actions on the canvas."

The newly introduced agent mode is specifically engineered to interpret and execute complex commands and edits across documents, spreadsheets, and presentations with greater precision. "Over the past year, we've seen remarkable improvements in model instruction-following, logical reasoning, and overall output quality," Chauhan noted. "These advancements allow the AI to reliably handle multi-step editing tasks without deviating from the user's original intent."

Users can now observe the Copilot AI agent operating in real time, with a dedicated sidebar tracking every modification step within the document. In Excel, the agent can autonomously adjust workbooks by inserting formulas or generating tables. Similarly, PowerPoint's agent mode seamlessly updates existing slides, incorporates fresh content, and strictly adheres to corporate-branded template styling.

Microsoft is deploying these enhanced Copilot capabilities as the default experience for subscribers of Microsoft 365 Copilot and Microsoft 365 Premium. The update will also extend to individual and family plan users within the Microsoft 365 ecosystem.
