Spotify Launches AI-Driven Prompt Playlists in UK and Other Markets

Following initial trials in New Zealand and recent launches in the US and Canada, Spotify announced on Monday the expansion of its AI-powered "Prompt Playlist" feature to Premium subscribers in the UK, Ireland, Australia, and Sweden.

This tool enables users to generate custom playlists by simply describing their listening preferences. Instead of searching for specific tracks or artists, users can define the desired mood, scene, or inspiration, leaving the rest to Spotify's algorithm.

To access the feature, users select "Create" and choose "Prompt Playlist," then input any command in English. Designed to interpret themes ranging from emotions and aesthetics to memories, prompts can be broad or specific. They may reference music eras, genres, activities, lyrics, instruments, or request playlists inspired by TV shows, movies, or personal milestones. Users can also specify whether the playlist should focus on new releases or existing library tracks.

Upon submission, Spotify's AI constructs a tailored playlist to meet the request. The system leverages listening history alongside current music and cultural trends. Furthermore, each track includes a brief explanation offering insight into why it was selected for that specific list.

Users can refine their playlists by tweaking the prompt or starting over. For those with evolving musical tastes, playlists can be scheduled to auto-refresh daily or weekly.

As the feature remains in beta, Spotify notes that changes may occur based on feedback, and usage limits currently apply. Some users have reported hitting a cap after approximately 20 to 30 prompts.

Recently, Spotify has expanded AI capabilities on its platform, including Page Match, which allows users to scan physical book pages to jump to corresponding audiobook positions, and Track Info. The platform also updated its lyrics feature to offer global translations and offline access. Last week, a partnership with SeatGeek enabled listeners to easily find concert ticket links within artist pages or upcoming tour dates in the app.

Internally, the company has integrated AI into its workflows. Spotify Co-CEO Gustav Söderström stated earlier this month that, thanks to AI, Spotify's top developers have not written a single line of code since December.

Spotify is also expanding its audiobook business by entering physical book sales. Soon, users in the US and UK will be able to purchase physical books directly through the application.
