Read moreMeta Platforms Inc. has informed its workforce of an impending reduction of approximately 8,000 roles, representing roughly 10% of its total staff, alongside the elimination of 6,000 open positions. The strategic downsizing aims to streamline corporate operations and financially offset the company's rapidly escalating investments in artificial intelligence.
Set to take effect on May 20, the workforce adjustments were disclosed in an internal memo by Chief Human Resources Officer Janelle Gale. According to reports, Gale emphasized that the restructuring will enable Meta to operate more efficiently while balancing the capital demands of its ongoing technological investments.
This initiative marks the company's most significant workforce reduction since the "Year of Efficiency" campaigns in 2022 and 2023, which collectively saw over 21,000 employees depart. The move underscores a continued corporate shift toward leaner organizational structures.
Financial projections indicate Meta's capital expenditure guidance for 2026 could reach $135 billion, nearly doubling the $72 billion allocated in 2025. The majority of this funding is earmarked for data center expansion, custom silicon development, and AI infrastructure. Despite these massive outlays, the tech giant continues to trail industry leaders like OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic in the generative AI race.
Industry sources describe the cuts as structural rather than performance-based. Meta is reportedly reorganizing its remaining workforce into AI-centric operational squads, while simultaneously transferring engineering talent across various departments into its dedicated Application AI division.
Impacted employees based in the United States will receive a comprehensive severance package, including 16 weeks of base salary, an additional two weeks of compensation for each year of service, and extended health insurance coverage for 18 months.
CEO Mark Zuckerberg previously outlined the rationale for this strategic shift during January's earnings call, noting that advanced AI capabilities now allow highly skilled individuals to execute projects that traditionally required large teams. Internally, the company is actively deploying tools powered by its Llama model to automate software development, marketing content generation, and customer support workflows.
Wall Street analysts have largely endorsed the restructuring strategy. Wedbush Securities analyst Dan Ives noted in a recent investor briefing that Meta's integration of AI automation is designed to streamline legacy processes, reduce operational overhead, and sustain productivity levels, ultimately justifying the transition toward a more agile corporate framework.
This latest announcement represents the third wave of workforce adjustments for Meta in 2026.
The initial reduction occurred in January, when the company trimmed approximately 1,500 positions within its Reality Labs division, accounting for 10% of that unit's headcount. CTO Andrew Bosworth confirmed the move in an internal post, which also announced the closure of four internal VR gaming studios. A subsequent round in March eliminated roughly 700 roles spanning Reality Labs, Facebook, talent acquisition, sales, and global operations.
Meta's ongoing restructuring aligns with a broader industry trend where maturing AI technologies are reshaping corporate headcounts. Thus far in 2026, the technology sector has witnessed approximately 95,000 job cuts. Notable reductions include Oracle's 30,000 layoffs and Amazon's elimination of 16,000 roles in January. Market analysts estimate that nearly half of these recent workforce reductions are directly driven by the adoption of AI-driven automation.
