Google and Volkswagen Announce Partnership to Deploy Generative AI

2024-09-26

Google and Volkswagen have partnered to integrate generative artificial intelligence into Volkswagen's mobile application. The collaboration was announced on Tuesday, September 24, as Google seeks to gain a competitive edge by offering AI application solutions to businesses.

Volkswagen is leveraging Google Cloud’s AI and machine learning capabilities, along with Google Cloud Consulting's expertise, to support its new myVW virtual assistant. This assistant provides drivers with access to essential vehicle information and services and is available to owners of the 2024 Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport models.

Consequently, drivers can use the in-app assistant to inquire about issues such as "How do I replace a flat tire?" or "What does this digital cockpit indicator signify?" Additionally, users can point their smartphone cameras at the dashboard to receive detailed information and context regarding indicator lights.

The AI assistant utilizes Volkswagen’s connected car data and Google Cloud’s Vertex AI platform powered by the Gemini model to deliver information to users. It also incorporates data from manuals, step-by-step guides, and Volkswagen’s YouTube channel to enhance the Gemini model.

This move marks another instance of tech giants venturing into the automotive sector. As reported by ReadWrite in July, Google's parent company Alphabet is investing an additional $5 billion into its autonomous driving subsidiary, Waymo.

Why Volkswagen is Collaborating with Google

Abdullah Shanti, Volkswagen Group US Chief Information Officer, stated, “AI is becoming a practical tool for Volkswagen owners, helping them better understand their vehicles and quickly access solutions to their queries. Thanks to our close partnership with Google Cloud, we are able to integrate valuable technology into our vehicles, effectively connecting them with our customers.”

Thomas Kurian, CEO of Google Cloud, added, “Volkswagen is setting a new standard for the driving experience by directly delivering the power of advanced generative AI to customers.

“With the myVW virtual assistant built on our AI platform and the multimodal capabilities of our Gemini model, all 2024 Volkswagen Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport owners can easily access highly personalized vehicle support.”

Starting in 2025, most Volkswagen owners with MY20 and newer models will be able to access the new Volkswagen virtual assistant through the myVW application available on the Apple Store and Google Play Store.
