OpenAI to Retire GPT-4o and Three Legacy Models Tomorrow

2026-02-13

OpenAI will phase out several older AI models from ChatGPT on February 13, 2026, including GPT-4o, GPT-4.1, GPT-4.1 mini, and o4-mini. These models will remain available via the API for the time being. The company attributes this decision to low usage, noting that only 0.1% of daily users currently select GPT-4o.

OpenAI's cautious approach to GPT-4o stems from the model's complex history. The model was initially deactivated in August 2025, only to be reinstated for paying subscribers following significant user backlash. Some users genuinely favored this model, known for its complacent and people-pleasing communication style. OpenAI directly addressed this sentiment in their announcement:

"We understand that losing access to GPT-4o will be frustrating for some users, and we did not make this decision lightly. Retiring models is never easy, but it allows us to focus on improving the models that the vast majority of people use today."

OpenAI positions GPT-5.1 and GPT-5.2 as enhanced successors, incorporating feedback from GPT-4o users. These newer models now offer adjustable tone and style settings, such as warmth and enthusiasm. However, these features may not fully satisfy the dedicated fanbase of GPT-4o.
