Target Joins OpenAI's Expanding Retail Application Ecosystem

2025-11-19

OpenAI is making a significant move into the retail sector, with Target set to launch a new shopping app powered by ChatGPT in the coming weeks.

This announcement follows OpenAI’s recent integration of dedicated retail applications into ChatGPT last month, including platforms like Canva, Coursera, Figma, Expedia, Spotify, and Zillow. It also aligns with OpenAI’s broader push to expand its AI-driven commercial ecosystem—evident in features like “instant checkout,” which enables users to make purchases directly within conversations with retailers such as Etsy and Shopify.

According to OpenAI, the Target app within ChatGPT will roll out in beta next week, allowing users to discover product ideas, browse inventory, build shopping carts, purchase groceries, and complete transactions seamlessly.

The collaboration marks a deepening of the existing enterprise partnership between OpenAI and Target. The retailer plans to deploy ChatGPT Enterprise across its 18,000-employee workforce at headquarters to enhance supply chain forecasting and streamline in-store operations. Additionally, Target intends to further embed OpenAI’s models into its digital infrastructure, supporting a wide range of functions—from employee assistance and customer service to AI-powered shopping assistants and personalized gift recommendations.
