Apple Launches Genmoji: AI-Powered Personalized Emojis

2024-11-13

In iOS 18.1, Apple introduced various Apple Intelligence features, such as writing tools and notification summaries. However, the Genmoji feature, which allows users to create custom emojis using text prompts, was not included at that time. With the rollout of iOS 18.2, iPadOS 18.2, and the public beta of macOS Sequoia 15.2, this AI-powered emoji generation feature is now available for trial to select users.

Genmoji was first unveiled at the WWDC 2024 conference, integrating into the iPhone's emoji keyboard. It enables users to create original emojis by entering descriptions, such as "a sloth wearing a suit and tie." Additionally, the feature supports generating character emojis from photos and can be used in messages, stickers, and Tapback reactions. Users can respond to messages with Genmoji or utilize Apple's message effects.

To use Genmoji, ensure that Apple Intelligence is enabled first. Then, open a new message or an existing conversation in the Messages app, tap the emoji keyboard icon in the lower-left corner, enter a description in the search bar, and select the "Create New Emoji" option below. Within seconds, the system will generate multiple AI-generated emoji versions based on your description. You can save your preferred Genmoji to the keyboard by tapping the "Add" button in the top-right corner. To save a Genmoji sent by others, long-press the emoji and select "Emoji Details" to view its generation prompt and download options.

Currently, Genmoji is available only to users with the iOS 18.2 public beta, and there may be a waiting list. As a result, users might need to wait several days or even weeks to gain access. The feature is expected to be officially launched in early December.

Devices compatible with Genmoji include the iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, iPhone 16 series, iPad mini equipped with the A17 Pro chip, and all iPads using Apple silicon chips (support for macOS Sequoia is forthcoming).
