Hinge's New AI Feature Helps Daters Break Through Boring Small Talk

Many Hinge users are frustrated with matches who like their profiles but never initiate a conversation. This often leads to awkward silence, placing all the pressure on one person to make the first move. Some struggle to come up with engaging openers and end up resorting to clichéd lines or bland greetings like “How are you?”

To address this issue, Hinge has introduced “Conversation Starters,” an AI-powered feature that offers personalized suggestions to help spark meaningful chats.

The feature aims to boost users’ confidence when sending that crucial first message. Now, when someone likes a profile, they’ll see three tailored prompts beneath each photo and profile prompt. The AI analyzes the recipient’s profile and generates relevant icebreakers—such as suggesting a comment about chess if a photo shows the person playing the game.

According to Hinge, Conversation Starters were developed based on direct user feedback. Internal research shows that 72% of Hinge users are more likely to consider a match if the “like” comes with a message. Additionally, users who include a note with their like are twice as likely to secure a date.

This new tool follows Hinge’s earlier AI-driven Prompt Feedback feature, which evaluates users’ written prompts and offers customized advice to help them craft more vivid and engaging responses by encouraging specific, personal details.

Despite these innovations, the growing integration of AI into the app has raised concerns—particularly among Gen Z users. A Bloomberg Intelligence survey found that younger users feel more uneasy than older generations about using AI to draft profile content or respond to messages in online dating.
