Recently, Humane announced the recall of approximately 10,500 charging cases for its AI Pin smart wearable devices. These charging cases were sold between November of last year and May of this year. According to the recall notice from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), the lithium polymer batteries inside the charging cases pose an overheating risk, which could potentially cause fires. Humane had previously acknowledged this issue in an email sent to consumers in June.
To date, there have been no reports of fires, personal injuries, or property damage caused by overheating charging cases. According to the recall notice, only one instance of a charging case overheating and melting during the charging process has been reported. Humane stated that the AI Pin device itself, its magnetic battery booster, and the charging mat are not affected by this recall.
However, this incident further highlights the challenges faced by Humane's first product. Since its launch, the product has struggled with negative reviews, sluggish sales, and high return rates. The recall of 10,500 charging cases also reflects the sales difficulties of the AI Pin. In an effort to reverse this trend, Humane has recently reduced the device's price (the discounted version no longer includes the charging case) and continues to roll out software updates. This month, the company announced the release of “CosmOS 1.2” on a certain platform, marking the largest software update since its launch.
For affected consumers, Humane is offering full refunds or charging case replacements. Consumers opting for a refund will receive $149 if the charging case was purchased separately, or $129 if it was part of the complete AI Pin bundle. According to the CPSC, Humane's revised and safer charging cases are expected to be available within three to six months.
