OpenAI has announced a series of upcoming enhancements for its popular AI-powered video generation app, Sora, which surged to the top of the App Store charts shortly after its late-September launch. Still holding the number-one spot in the U.S. and Canada, Sora is set to roll out new video editing capabilities, enabling users to create “cameo” appearances featuring their pets and other personal items, alongside upgraded social features. The company also confirmed that an Android version of the app is “coming soon.”
The announcement was made by Sora lead Bill Peebles on X, who revealed that the new creative tools would debut within the next few days. These tools will allow users to transform pets and everyday objects—such as “favorite plush toys and virtually anything else”—into shareable AI cameos.
“Cameos” are a signature Sora feature that lets users generate personalized AI characters by uploading a reference video. Once created, these cameos can be shared with others, empowering friends and collaborators to produce videos using your custom AI avatars.
“We anticipate users will create countless fun and imaginative new cameos with this capability,” Peebles wrote on X. “To help surface the best ones, we’re updating the generation interface to showcase trending cameos in real time.”
Additionally, Sora will soon introduce basic video editing functionality, starting with the ability to stitch multiple clips together. More advanced editing tools will follow over time. The app is also undergoing a social experience overhaul, which may include dedicated channels for universities, workplaces, sports teams, and other communities.
OpenAI noted it is actively working to refine its content moderation policies—addressing user feedback that current safeguards are overly restrictive—and to enhance the app’s overall performance.
While Sora is already listed for pre-registration on the Google Play Store, OpenAI has not yet disclosed an official release date for the Android version. Peebles described the launch as “coming soon,” without offering further specifics.
According to third-party analytics firm Appfigures, Sora has already amassed approximately 2 million downloads since its launch less than a month ago—a significant figure considering the app remains invite-only and is currently available only in the U.S. and Canada.
