TikTok Uses AI to Turn Your Long Videos into Short Clips

TikTok unveiled three new features at its U.S. Creator Summit yesterday, including an updated revenue-sharing model for creators offering subscriptions and new tools designed to assist with early-stage video planning and splitting longer clips into multiple shorter segments.

Smart Split is an AI-powered editing tool that automatically breaks down longer videos into smaller, shareable clips. While it works on videos over one minute in length, TikTok suggests it’s especially useful for extended podcast recordings or footage captured throughout the day via wearable cameras. Users select which portions of their video they’d like turned into short clips, and Smart Split handles the rest—determining optimal clip lengths, generating captions, and even reformatting content vertically. The feature is now available globally through TikTok Studio, the platform’s web-based management dashboard.

AI Outline is another new tool intended for use before any recording begins. As its name implies, it leverages artificial intelligence to generate video outlines based on user prompts or trending search topics on TikTok. These outlines include auto-generated titles, hashtags, hooks, and script ideas that creators can refine to suit their personal style. Unlike Smart Split, however, AI Outline has a more limited rollout: starting today, it’s only available to TikTok creators aged 18 and older in the U.S., Canada, and select other markets, with a broader release planned in the coming weeks.

Currently, TikTok creators who offer paid subscriptions and provide exclusive content receive 70% of subscription revenue (after fees). However, eligible creators—those with at least 10,000 followers, 100,000 video views last month, and a minimum of three subscriber-only videos posted last month—can now unlock additional monthly bonuses that boost their revenue share up to 90%.
