Today, "Smart Frontier" reported that ByteDance has significantly heightened its focus on the Jimong product, actively seeking a novel development trajectory to potentially launch a blockbuster product akin to Douyin in the era of AI.
According to the insider, ByteDance's leadership has conducted an in-depth analysis and concluded that "AI conversational" products may only represent a transitional phase in AI technology application. They foresee that the optimal future products will likely emphasize enhanced visual experiences and lower user engagement barriers. Currently, products like Doubao (an AI conversational tool) achieve user activity of 2-3 days per week, with approximately 5-6 message interactions daily and an average session duration of about 2 minutes, totaling roughly 10 minutes of usage per user. However, there is still room for improvement to reach the ideal metrics.
It's noteworthy that a ByteDance executive mentioned Doubao's performance is already impressive, ranking in the top tier among similar domestic products. Nevertheless, they also believe that text-based conversational platforms like ChatGPT might not be the ultimate endpoint for AI technology. The most effective product forms may need to move beyond traditional text dialogues.
Additionally, another insider revealed to "Smart Frontier" that ByteDance maintains a cautious stance regarding the viability of paid subscription models in the Chinese market. Moreover, the limited usage duration and interaction frequency of products like Doubao restrict potential advertising opportunities, further constraining their commercial scalability.
In this context, the emergence of the Jimong product stands out. Jimong, an AI creative tool and community, was launched by Zhang Nan, the former CEO of the Douyin Group, after she transitioned to Jianying. In February this year, Zhang Nan announced her resignation from her CEO role at Douyin Group, stating her intention to dedicate more efforts to the development of Jianying and Jimong. She believes that advancements in AI image generation technology are bringing unprecedented changes and opportunities to the content creation tools industry.
ByteDance's decision to prioritize the Jimong product is a clear endorsement of Zhang Nan and her team, signaling a significant shift in ByteDance's strategic approach within the AI domain.
