Google has introduced an experimental feature in Search Labs called AI Mode, which utilizes Gemini 2.0 technology to deliver advanced AI-powered responses for complex queries. This new mode builds upon the existing AI Overview feature, which already boasts a user base of over one billion.

AI Mode is designed to address detailed, multi-part questions and follow-up queries, offering users a deeper exploration of topics. It combines the sophisticated reasoning capabilities of Gemini 2.0 with Google's robust information systems, including the Knowledge Graph and real-time data sources, to generate more comprehensive answers.

To achieve this, the system employs "query expansion" technology. By conducting multiple searches across subtopics and related data sources, it provides broader responses, allowing users to access richer information than traditional Google searches.

Google initially launched AI Mode to subscribers of Google One AI Premium as a limited, opt-in experience within Labs. The company plans to refine this feature based on user feedback, aiming to enhance its capabilities by incorporating more visual responses and diverse formats.

In addition, Google has further expanded the functionality of AI Overview by launching Gemini 2.0 in the United States for coding, advanced mathematics, and multimodal queries. The company has also made AI Overview accessible to teenage users and removed the login requirement for accessing the feature.

While Google strives to maintain objectivity in AI responses, it acknowledges potential challenges such as unintentional role adoption or bias. The company emphasizes its commitment to rapid improvements based on user feedback, consistently upholding high standards of usefulness and quality.
