Chrome for Android to Officially Support Third-Party Password Manager Auto-Fill

2024-10-18

Earlier this year, the Android version of Google Chrome introduced support for automatic filling with third-party password managers. However, due to some bugs and inconsistent autofill suggestions, the option to set an alternative password manager as the default autofill provider was hidden behind a toggle switch. Fortunately, Google has addressed these issues in the latest Chrome browser beta and plans to officially roll out this feature to users next month.

In a recent Android developer blog post, Google revealed that previously, third-party password managers had to rely on compatibility modes to automatically fill forms in Chrome. This led to unexpected issues, such as unstable page scrolling and the simultaneous display of duplicate suggestions from both Google and third-party providers.

To address these challenges, Google introduced native third-party autofill support for alternative password managers in the latest Chrome beta (version 131). This enhancement ensures a smoother and more seamless user experience when using third-party autofill providers, allowing users to effortlessly autofill passwords, keys, addresses, and payment information.

Chrome version 131 is scheduled for release in the stable channel on November 12, enabling all users to benefit from native third-party autofill support. While the functionality currently requires users to manually enable a toggle in the beta, Google has confirmed that it will be enabled by default in the stable release.
