Elon Musk's X (formerly known as Twitter) has started testing a new usage-based API pricing model. This means developers will pay based on the actual volume of API usage, rather than a fixed monthly fee. Currently, the new model is in a closed testing phase, accessible only to a select group of developers. Those chosen for the trial will also receive a $500 credit to help them adapt to the updated pricing structure.
The social media platform states that the goal is to make it easier and more cost-effective for both new and experienced developers to build applications on the platform. In this pay-as-you-go model, different types of API requests—such as reading posts, publishing new content, viewing trends, or managing bookmarks—each carry their own separate fees. This contrasts with X’s 2023 tiered subscription plan, which required developers to pay a fixed monthly rate for a limited number of requests. A new cost calculator has also been added to the API pricing page, enabling developers to estimate expenses based on their usage patterns.
Although the platform hasn’t confirmed whether this system will fully replace the old tiered plan, the move marks a significant shift in how X monetizes its developer tools. Over the past two years, the platform has revised its API strategy multiple times. For example, in early 2023, free API access was discontinued and paid tiers were introduced. That change led many independent developers to scale back or abandon their projects due to increased costs. Later that year, reports emerged that X was exploring a revenue-sharing model for enterprise API clients, where developers would pay a percentage of their revenue instead of fixed fees.
“Our top priority is supporting builders by opening up our developer platform. We will also launch a completely new developer experience and redesign the developer console. Those who are selected will be among the first to test it,” the company announced in a recent post.
