Apple Unveils Final Cut Pro 11 with AI Features and Multiple Updates

2024-11-14

Apple Inc. has finally launched Final Cut Pro 11, marking 13 years since the release of Final Cut X. Over its 25-year history, the video editing software endured a 13-year hiatus, leading to speculation about Apple's abandonment of the product. However, the release of the new version demonstrates Apple's ongoing commitment to Final Cut Pro.

The update's centerpiece lies in the integration of AI technology. The new Magnetic Mask feature can automatically analyze and accurately separate people or objects from the video, allowing for customized background adjustments without the need for a green screen. Additionally, this feature supports color correction and video effects integration, enabling finer project control.

Another significant AI-driven feature is Transcribe to Captions, which can convert spoken words into subtitles and directly add them to the Final Cut timeline. According to Apple, this feature is powered by an internally developed large-scale language model.

Final Cut Pro 11 also offers dedicated support for Apple's mixed reality headset, Vision Pro. Users can now edit Spatial Video captured on the iPhone 15 Pro or any iPhone 16 model, performing color correction, adding special effects, and adjusting title depth positions. Although the Vision Pro is priced at $3,500 and hasn't become the mainstream consumer product Apple anticipated, the company is developing more affordable models.

The new version of Final Cut also includes productivity-enhancing features like the Magnetic Timeline, which allows for quick rearrangement of clips while maintaining audio synchronization. To fully leverage Apple's in-house M-series chips, Final Cut Pro 11 has optimized the simultaneous playback capability of multiple 4K and 8K ProRes video streams.

Meanwhile, Final Cut Pro for iPad version 2.1 was also released on the same day, introducing light effects and color enhancements for the touch interface, as well as an improved workflow experience. Existing users can download this update for free.

Final Cut Pro 11 is now available for download on the Mac App Store, with existing users eligible for a free upgrade. New users must purchase it for $300 or decide whether to buy after a 90-day trial.
