Google Introduces Customizable Audio Summaries for NotebookLM

2024-10-18

Google has introduced an audio overview customization feature in its AI-powered note-taking and research assistant, NotebookLM. This long-awaited functionality allows users to guide the AI-generated content summaries, making them more aligned with specific needs and preferences.

Previously, NotebookLM's audio overview utilized Google's Gemini 1.5 AI model to create an interactive, two-person conversation-style audio program from user content. However, users had no control over the output. The new "customize" feature enables users to focus on particular topics, adjust the level of expertise, and direct the AI host, ensuring that the covered content best matches the user's objectives, whether emphasizing technical details or high-level summaries.

This effectively provides a set of instructions to the AI host before the overview, ensuring the shared information aligns more closely with what the user deems important. This update addresses issues of conversations straying from relevant topics, giving users greater control over the depth and focus of the content.

The product lead for NotebookLM stated that one of the most desired features was the ability to slightly guide the AI. The new customizable audio feature is designed to meet this need and also helps reduce AI errors caused by generating conversations beyond the provided information scope.

In addition to the customization feature, Google has introduced background playback for audio overviews, allowing users to listen while continuing to use NotebookLM. Users can reference materials, extract quotes, or explore related citations without interrupting the audio playback. This functionality aims to enhance user productivity through multitasking.

Meanwhile, Google has announced the launch of a NotebookLM Business pilot program, integrating NotebookLM into Google Workspace. This initiative is tailored for businesses, universities, and institutions, featuring advanced functionalities that emphasize privacy and data security, which have been central to NotebookLM's design from the outset.

Organizations participating in the pilot will receive early access to new features, training, and email support, enabling them to shape the future of NotebookLM to better meet their needs. According to Google, over 80,000 organizations are already using NotebookLM, and the introduction of the enterprise version marks a strategic move to expand its influence in business applications.

Google has not yet disclosed specific pricing, detailed information, or a comprehensive release timeline for NotebookLM Business. However, the ongoing demand for AI-driven flexible note-taking and summarization tools is evidently on the rise.
