Microsoft's AI-Powered Copy and Paste Now Leverages On-Device AI

Microsoft is enhancing the Advanced Paste utility in its Windows 11 PowerToys suite by integrating on-device AI capabilities. With the version 0.96 update, users can now route AI requests through either Microsoft’s Foundry Local tool or the open-source Ollama platform—both of which leverage the device’s Neural Processing Unit (NPU) to run AI models locally, eliminating the need for cloud connectivity.

This advancement means users no longer need to purchase API credits for tasks such as translating or summarizing text copied to the clipboard. Additionally, all data remains securely stored on the local device.

Beyond on-device AI support, Advanced Paste now also offers compatibility with a broader range of online AI models, including Azure OpenAI, Gemini, and Mistral—expanding beyond its previous exclusive reliance on OpenAI.

The tool has also received a visual overhaul: it now displays the current clipboard content directly in the interface and features a dropdown menu for selecting preferred AI models.
