Apple Reportedly Nears Deal to Pay Google $1 Billion Annually to Support New Siri

According to a new report, Apple is nearing an agreement with Google that would see the iPhone maker pay the tech giant approximately $1 billion annually to use a customized version of Google’s Gemini AI model as part of a comprehensive overhaul of Siri.

This move marks a significant shift for Apple, which has traditionally relied on its own in-house technology. The company plans to adopt Google’s model as a temporary measure until its proprietary AI becomes sufficiently advanced to power a suite of upcoming features for its voice assistant.

The customized AI model, boasting 1.2 trillion parameters—a common metric for assessing software complexity and capability—would vastly outpace Apple’s current models. By comparison, Apple’s existing cloud-based intelligent system operates with 150 billion parameters, making Google’s offering roughly eight times more complex.

Earlier this year, Apple also evaluated AI models from OpenAI and Anthropic. After testing offerings from all three companies, Apple ultimately opted to move forward with Google.

Bloomberg reports that the fully revamped Siri is expected to launch next spring. However, with several months still remaining before release, the final implementation may undergo further adjustments.
