Google Launches GenChess: AI-Powered Customized Chess Experience

2024-11-28

Google Lab has launched a new online project named GenChess, an innovative variant of chess that generates personalized pieces based on text prompts. Users must log in with their Gmail accounts to experience the game. Once logged in, players can click the "Generate" button and enter their desired themes, such as sushi or pizza, to customize their chess pieces.

GenChess offers two styling options: a classic style that faithfully replicates traditional chessboard designs, and a creative style that presents a more abstract visual effect. After the model generates a complete set of pieces, users can further customize individual chess pieces. For example, if dissatisfied with the king’s appearance, players can adjust it by providing additional text prompts.

After customizing their pieces, players can generate an opponent and start a match. In testing, the system matched a sushi-themed chessboard with a robot opponent themed around burritos. Players can choose from three difficulty levels (Easy, Medium, Hard) and two timing modes (5+3 minutes or 10+0 minutes) based on personal preferences.

A Google spokesperson stated that this project aims to showcase the collaboration between artificial intelligence, design, and chess, enabling anyone to engage in the game through image generation technology. Additionally, with the launch of the World International Chess Championship, Google announced four chess-related initiatives. These include collaboration with the International Chess Federation, inviting the public to participate in programming challenges on the Kaggle platform, and developing an AI chess engine.

Furthermore, the new conversational game Chess Gem within the Gemini app is expected to launch next month, allowing users to compete against language models and enjoy interactive communication. However, this feature is limited to Gemini Premium subscribers.
