Earlier this week, OpenAI introduced a new feature enabling developers to build applications within ChatGPT, allowing users to perform tasks and receive answers to questions directly related to those apps via prompts. This innovative functionality allows developers to create apps inside ChatGPT, with users interacting through prompts to execute tasks and obtain app-specific responses.
Several companies have already launched interactive experiences using this feature, including Spotify, where users can generate playlists and receive song recommendations through ChatGPT.
When you mention Spotify in ChatGPT, you'll have the option to link your account. A button labeled “Use Spotify to answer this question” will appear at the bottom of the screen. Once connected, the AI gains access to your data, such as your likes and listening history, providing more contextual information to generate better results.
From there, you can request recommendations for tracks, artists, playlists, or podcasts tailored to your preferences.
You can make your prompts as detailed as possible. For instance, you could create a playlist for a specific mood, choose an activity for which you want a playlist, or request one that features only your most-played artists or favorite genres. The system will also ask about your preferred playlist length, useful for planning long trips.
During our testing, we asked it to create a dog-walking playlist where every song title included the word “Dog.” Here’s what it produced:
Clicking on any suggested track or podcast will open the Spotify app, allowing you to listen or watch directly from there.
ChatGPT can also perform actions on your behalf within Spotify, including playback controls, adding or removing items from your library, creating, editing, and following private playlists, and managing your follow list.
It’s important to note that when you connect your Spotify account, you agree to the application’s privacy policy.
This policy includes critical details about data sharing and security, noting that in the event of a security breach within ChatGPT, your data might be accessed by unauthorized parties. Along with granting ChatGPT access to data such as the songs and podcasts you’re playing, content saved in your Spotify library, and the people you follow, you also provide your IP address and general location.
However, you can disconnect your Spotify account at any time.
Additionally, Spotify does not share content from artists and creators on its platform with OpenAI for training purposes. All music, podcasts, and other audio or video content remain protected.
This feature is available in English on the web and mobile apps for all ChatGPT users—free, Plus, and Pro—across 145 countries.
Both free and premium Spotify users can utilize this integration; however, the company states that premium users will receive a more personalized experience.
Other companies integrating their apps into ChatGPT include Booking.com, Canva, Coursera, Expedia, Figma, and Zillow. These integrations allow you to, for example, ask Coursera to teach you something or search Zillow for apartments within a specific price range.
