According to new estimates from app intelligence provider Appfigures, OpenAI’s AI-powered video app—developed by the maker of ChatGPT—recorded approximately 470,000 downloads on its first day in the Google Play Store across its available markets.
This Android launch significantly outpaced its iOS counterpart, which saw around 360,000 installs—a 327% increase—but the firm notes this comparison isn't entirely apples-to-apples.
On iOS, Sora was initially limited to users in the U.S. and Canada and operated on an invite-only basis.
In contrast, the Android version launched in the U.S., Canada, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam, and OpenAI removed the invite requirement in its key markets by late October.
Despite its initial limited rollout, the app quickly became a hit. The iOS version surpassed one million installs within its first week and rapidly climbed to the top of the App Store charts. As of today, it remains ranked fourth among free iPhone apps on the U.S. App Store.
With Sora, users can generate videos using AI based on text prompts. These videos can also incorporate AI-animated avatars of the user and their friends through a feature called Cameos. Content is displayed in a TikTok-style vertical feed, allowing users to browse creations made by others with the tool.
Appfigures has also revised its earlier estimate for Sora’s first-day iOS downloads. Initially, its model suggested around 56,000 installs on day one. With more data now available, the updated projection places that figure closer to 110,000, of which approximately 69,300 came from the U.S.
By comparison, roughly 296,000 of the Android app’s 470,000 total installs originated in the U.S., indicating sustained interest in the AI video creation tool even after the initial iOS launch hype began to fade.
