Motive Launches AI Dashcam Plus to Help Fleet Operators Avoid Collisions

Motive Technologies Inc. has unveiled a new device called the Motive AI Dashcam Plus, designed to help trucking operators reduce collision risks and enhance fleet safety.

Based in San Francisco, Motive specializes in developing sensors and software solutions for logistics fleets. The company’s hardware can be installed on commercial trucks to monitor location, fuel levels, and other operational metrics. Collected data is transmitted to a cloud-based platform where dispatchers can oversee delivery progress and manage tasks such as scheduling vehicle maintenance.

The AI Dashcam Plus is a compact unit mounted on a truck’s windshield, featuring a forward-facing camera system that monitors traffic conditions ahead. Unlike standard dashcams with a single lens, this model uses dual lenses to capture more precise depth information. Onboard artificial intelligence algorithms analyze video feeds in real time to detect risky driving behaviors, including tailgating and unsafe lane changes.

The primary camera is equipped with a zoom lens capable of 2560 x 1440-pixel resolution, specifically engineered to capture clear images of license plates—critical for post-incident investigations. According to Motive, the imaging system performs reliably even in motion and under challenging weather conditions like rain or fog.

In addition to visual monitoring, the device gathers multiple data streams. Two integrated motion sensors allow it to detect low-severity rear-end collisions that may not be fully visible to the camera. A built-in GPS module tracks the vehicle’s real-time location, enhancing situational awareness for fleet managers.

Several features are inherited from Motive’s existing product, the Motive Vehicle Gateway. This system connects directly to a truck’s engine control unit (ECU) to collect diagnostics, fuel consumption data, and potential fault codes. Data is then relayed via an embedded LTE modem to Motive’s cloud-based fleet management platform for analysis and reporting.

The AI Dashcam Plus also functions as a hands-free communication hub. Dispatchers can send alerts to drivers about mechanical issues, route changes, or adverse weather. Drivers, in turn, can interact with an onboard AI assistant that provides useful operational details, such as distance to the next stop or estimated arrival times.

The device runs its AI workloads on Qualcomm’s Dragonwing QCS6490 system-on-chip, which includes an octa-core CPU, a dedicated GPU, and a machine learning accelerator capable of 12 trillion operations per second. Motive claims this delivers three times the processing power of competing dashcam systems, enabling faster and more accurate event detection.

The launch follows six months after the company secured $150 million in a funding round led by Kleiner Perkins. At the time, Motive reported its technology was deployed across more than 1.3 million devices serving over 100,000 organizations. Its platform is used not only by logistics providers but also by utility companies, internet service providers, and other enterprise fleets seeking to improve safety and efficiency.
