Elon Musk Plans to Launch "Grokipedia," an AI-Powered Wikipedia Competitor

2025-10-02

Elon Musk has announced that his artificial intelligence company xAI is working on a new online knowledge platform called Grokipedia, which he claims will directly compete with Wikipedia. According to Musk, the project aims to significantly enhance the quality of existing encyclopedias by relying on advanced AI technology to create and refine entries. Grokipedia will be built upon xAI’s chatbot, Grok, and the billionaire emphasized that it will be freely accessible to the public while encouraging open contributions.

Musk has long criticized Wikipedia, accusing the platform of bias and asserting that its editing process is dominated by what he refers to as “left-wing activists.” He argues that Wikipedia unfairly treats certain news sources as more reliable than others, thereby exerting excessive influence over the presentation of online information. Furthermore, since Wikipedia pages frequently appear at the top of Google search results and are widely used for training artificial intelligence (AI) models, Musk believes these alleged biases could have far-reaching consequences.

Clearly, this clash with Wikipedia is not new. Musk has previously mocked the platform, sometimes calling it “Wokipedia,” and has questioned its fundraising practices. At one point, he even joked about donating $1 billion if the website temporarily changed its name to something more provocative. His latest move to launch Grokipedia demonstrates that he is serious about challenging Wikipedia’s dominance in the realm of knowledge sharing.

Musk also mentioned that Grokipedia will support broad public participation, similar to Wikipedia’s community-driven editing model. He has invited people to contribute to the platform and confirmed there will be no access restrictions.

However, specific details regarding how Grokipedia will function remain unclear. It is currently unknown who will oversee the platform, how content disputes will be resolved, or what safeguards will be implemented to prevent the AI from spreading misinformation or bias. In fact, Musk indicated that Grokipedia will heavily rely on Grok, the AI assistant launched by xAI in 2023. Grok has already been trained on vast amounts of public data, including books, websites, and even Wikipedia itself. According to Musk, it will be capable of rewriting encyclopedia entries to correct inaccuracies, add missing details, and provide richer context. That said, Grok has also been involved in several high-profile controversies, particularly for generating false or misleading information.

Recently, xAI’s text-to-video tool Grok Imagine faced intense criticism over a so-called “spicy mode” reportedly allowing the creation of explicit content, including nudity. Earlier, its virtual companions (such as Ani and Valentine) made headlines due to user reports of sexually suggestive interactions. The Grok chatbot itself became a focal point of controversy after generating antisemitic remarks, including praising Adolf Hitler and even referring to itself as “MechaHitler.” Worse still, in August 2025, reports surfaced that a bug in the shared feature exposed approximately 370,000 private Grok AI conversations online.
