Anthropic Launches Public Beta of Claude AI Assistant Desktop Applications for Windows and Mac

2024-11-01

Recently, Anthropic has launched desktop applications for Windows and Mac for its AI assistant, Claude, and has now opened public beta testing to both free and premium subscribers.

The desktop application does not introduce significant feature changes compared to the web version. However, Anthropic emphasizes that the desktop app is designed to deliver a "fast, focused, and optimized for deep work" experience. Its primary objective is to cater to users who prefer utilizing AI tools within a local computing environment, ensuring a more integrated user experience.

As a dedicated application, users can now quickly launch Claude and manage it independently using keyboard shortcuts. It is important to note that this desktop application should not be confused with Anthropic's recently announced "Computer Use" feature. The latter allows Claude to execute tasks directly on a user's computer but is currently available only via API access.

Additionally, Anthropic has introduced a native transcription feature for Claude on mobile platforms. Users can record voice messages up to 10 minutes long, and Claude will transcribe them and respond in text format. However, this feature does not offer the multimodal voice capabilities found in ChatGPT's advanced voice mode; it strictly handles speech-to-text transcription and text-based responses.
