Instagram Users Can Now Edit IG Stories Directly with Meta AI Tools

Meta has integrated its AI-powered photo and video editing tools directly into Instagram Stories, enabling users to modify or completely transform visual content by entering simple text prompts.

While Meta previously offered image-editing capabilities on Instagram, those features were limited to interactions within the Meta AI chatbot. Bringing text-based editing directly into Stories significantly enhances accessibility to these creative tools.

The new functionality appears under the “Restyle” menu at the top of Instagram Stories when users tap the brush icon. To edit an image, users can select options like “Add,” “Remove,” or “Change,” then describe their desired modifications in the prompt field. For instance, Meta notes that users can request changes such as altering hair color, placing a crown on their head, or swapping in a sunset backdrop.

Users can also apply preset effects to modify outfits or shift the overall aesthetic of an image—adding accessories like sunglasses or a leather jacket, or applying artistic filters such as watercolor. For videos, effects like falling snow or animated flames can be added to enhance the visual experience.

It’s important to note that using Meta AI on Instagram means agreeing to Meta’s AI Terms of Service, which permit the AI to analyze your media—including facial features. According to these terms, when you upload an image, Meta may “summarize image content, modify the image, and generate new content based on it.”

Meta continues to roll out AI-driven updates to stay competitive. Recently, the company was spotted testing a “Write with Meta AI” prompt designed to help users craft clever comments for their Instagram posts.

Last month, Meta introduced a new AI-generated video feed called “Vibes” in its Meta AI app—a move potentially aimed at boosting user engagement and downloads. According to Similarweb data as of October 17, the app’s daily active users across iOS and Android surged from approximately 775,000 four weeks prior to 2.7 million.

In response to potential parental concerns, Meta also announced earlier this month that it will introduce new parental controls, allowing guardians to disable chats with AI characters and monitor the topics their teens discuss with the Meta AI chatbot.
