Intel is ramping up its presence in the gaming hardware space with a new chip and platform tailored for portable gaming devices.
The upcoming platform will combine both hardware and software components, announced by Daniel Rogers, Vice President and General Manager of Client Computing Products at Intel, during the company's keynote at CES on Monday. Built upon the Intel Core Series 3 processors—codenamed Panther Lake—this platform is already beginning to roll out across various PC models.
This future solution will feature a dedicated chip specifically engineered for handheld gaming systems.
The Panther Lake processors mark Intel's first chips manufactured using its advanced 18A process node, which is set to enter production in 2025.
While Intel has long been active in the gaming sector—supplying processors for gaming PCs since the 1990s—the company intensified its commitment in 2022 with the launch of its Intel Arc graphics cards.
Expanding into the handheld gaming market represents a strategic move, especially as the segment is currently dominated by AMD. Just recently, AMD unveiled its latest processor for gaming PCs, the Ryzen 7 9850X3D, during its own CES presentation, alongside new ray-tracing and graphics technologies.
Rogers confirmed that Intel plans to disclose further details about its handheld gaming initiative later this year.
