Facebook to Launch AI Dating Assistant

On Monday, Meta announced that it will introduce an AI assistant to its Facebook dating platform.

The chatbot is designed to assist users in finding matches that better align with their preferences. For example, Meta might suggest users seek "a girl from Brooklyn working in the tech industry," or users can ask the AI to help optimize their profiles.

Additionally, Meta stated that through a new feature called Meet Cute, it is aiming to "help users combat swiping fatigue" by offering a weekly "surprise match" selected algorithmically.

The company reported a 10% year-over-year increase in dating match rates among adults aged 18 to 29, with hundreds of thousands of users in this age group creating Facebook dating profiles each month. While this figure remains relatively small compared to competitors like Tinder, which has around 50 million daily active users, and Hinge, with about 10 million daily active users.

AI features have become standard in mainstream dating apps. Even newer dating platforms such as Sitch are trying to differentiate themselves through AI capabilities.

Match Group—the parent company of Tinder, Hinge, OKCupid, and others—entered a partnership with OpenAI last year as part of an investment exceeding $20 million in AI technology. This is a significant move, especially considering Match Group's financial struggles, with its stock price dropping approximately 68% over the past five years. So far, this investment has led to features such as an AI photo selector, which scans your camera roll to help choose profile pictures, and AI-driven matching tools. Hinge also offers a function allowing users to improve their profile prompt responses using AI. Bumble has introduced similar AI-based tools, and its founder, Whitney Wolfe Herd, even sparked some debate last year by suggesting that one day users might have personal "AI concierges" that could interact with other users' AIs to assess compatibility.
